Hi,

We are Mark and Sara in Durham, North Carolina, and our daughter Maria turns three at the end of November.

Mark grew up speaking Russian and Ukrainian and works as a partner at a venture capital fund, from home most days with some travel. Sara grew up speaking Mandarin and runs our home and Maria's days, and she would be the person you see most.

Maria is cheerful and talks constantly. She loves books, songs and fairy tales, and she is at the age where she repeats every new word she hears.

As a family we read a lot, cook, travel, hike and swim. We keep a calm house, we plan the week on a Sunday, and we would rather agree something clearly than leave you guessing. If something is not working we will tell you in the first week, not the third month, and we expect the same from you.

Durham is in the Research Triangle. Duke and the University of North Carolina are both close, so there is plenty of choice for your study requirement and a lot of young people around.

We would love to hear from you, in Russian, in Chinese or in English, whichever you prefer. Tell us about the youngest child you have looked after and one book or song from your childhood you would want to teach Maria.

Mark, Sara and Maria

You would look after Maria, who turns three at the end of November. She is our only child, she has never been in daycare, and her days are at home, at the park and at the library.

We want a fluent Russian or Mandarin speaker who will use that language with her all day, read to her, sing with her and tell her the stories they grew up on. Mark grew up speaking Russian and Ukrainian, Sara grew up speaking Mandarin, and we speak English to each other.

A normal day: Maria wakes around 7 and has breakfast. The morning is the park, the library, or crafts and games at home. Lunch, then a nap from about one to three, which is your break. The afternoon is play, a walk, and dinner around six. Bath, books and bed by half past seven.

Everything we ask of you is hers: her meals, planned, shopped for, cooked and washed up after; her laundry and bedding; her bedroom and play areas and her things wherever they end up; her bathroom after bath time; her naps, outings, classes and playdates.

Up to 45 hours a week, mostly weekdays with some weekend work, though not every weekend. A full day and a half day off every week, a full weekend off every month, and two weeks of paid holiday a year.

You would have your own bedroom with a window and your own bathroom in a four bedroom house, fast wifi, and a phone plan we pay for. You would not need to drive, so you do not need a licence for us. We cover your travel to class and to the monthly au pair events.

One serious thing. Maria has a tree nut and peanut allergy and a fish and shellfish allergy. You would need to be comfortable reading every label and asking us before giving her anything new. We will walk you through it properly in your first week.
